Ceftiofur, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, has the IUPAC name (6R,7R)-3-[(acetyloxy)methyl]-7-[(Z)-2-(2-furanyl)-2-(4-methyl-1-piperazinyl)acetylamino]-8-oxo-5-thia-1-azabicyclo[4.2.0]oct-2-ene-2-carboxylic acid. Its molecular formula is C17H21N5O6S, with a molecular weight of 423.46 g/mol. Structurally, it features a beta-lactam ring fused to a dihydrothiazine ring, with a furanyl-piperazine side chain. Therapeutically, it treats bacterial infections in veterinary medicine, targeting Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens. It is a white to off-white powder, sparingly soluble in water, with a pKa of ~3.5. Ceftiofur inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), disrupting peptidoglycan cross-linking and inducing cell lysis.
