Empagliflozin, IUPAC name 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-((3-(4-chlorophenyl)-5,5-dimethyl-4-oxo-1-pyrrolidinyl)methyl)-1H-pyrazole-4-carboxylic acid, is a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. Its molecular formula is C19H18Cl2N4O3 (molecular weight: 413.27 g/mol). Structurally, it features a pyrazole ring fused to a pyrrolidinone core with chlorophenyl substituents. Therapeutically, it is used for managing type 2 diabetes mellitus by reducing renal glucose reabsorption. It is a white to off-white solid with moderate water solubility (pKa ~4.5) and high metabolic stability. Mechanistically, it selectively inhibits SGLT2 in renal proximal tubules, promoting glucosuria and lowering blood glucose levels.
